The Iluminar Learning Management
System is a comprehensive system for management and delivery
of training content and tracking, management and reporting of
student activity, progress and test results. Authoring a
course for ILMS is straight forward and easy to do and
delivers superior training. Complexity
is common and the delivery of today’s complex content for the
purposes of training, testing and supporting a user’s
knowledge places a heavy burden on the instructional designers
and trainers working to build that content into useful
applications. An
authoring environment needs to provide a content author simple
tools and functionality that make it easy to organize and
present complex information. The tools also need to
provide opportunities for authors to create tests and quizzes
to verify a student has achieved an adequate understanding of
the material presented.
MakeIT is
the authoring application used to form content into courses
compatible with the Iluminar Learning Management System. This application
offers a simple environment for organizing and presenting
information with no need for any kind of programming or
scripting. All of its functionality is organized into easy
object editors for manipulating the various forms of course
content you may want to include in a course including full
motion video, graphics and pictures, text, sounds and
tests.
MakeIT Product Explanation
|
Create a new course
MakeIT starts with a simple user interface to begin the process of creating a new course. Course information is added as a set of individual objects we call packets. The packets are organized into an outline displayed on the left hand side of the screen. The outline representation should have a familiar look and feel since it is very similar to the typical folder structure users see when viewing files and directories on a computer system.
|
|
Create course specifications
As packets are added to the course outline, properties and options can be established for each packet which will control specific behaviors and effects when the information is presented to the user. Each media form has its own specific editor for changing these attributes. The first editor you will encounter when creating a new course is, of course, the course editor.
|
|
|
Add video
When you want to add video to a course, all you need to do is create a new video packet, open the video editor and set the properties that tell the system where to find your video file, what the specific video segment is that should be played and other options that control the flow of the course after playing the video is completed.
|
|
Add graphics with sound files
Graphics and still images are added in a similar manner. Create the packet, choose the image file and set the options. With this media type, you can also include sound files that might describe specific details in the image or they might even provide examples of sounds emitted by a piece of pictured equipment or in a certain scenario. You are limited only by your imagination.
|
|
|
Add text with sound files
Text is very useful for communicating many details that are not visible in a picture or video. Text packets can be used to list training objectives, specific details about equipment, regulatory and statutory information and other descriptive information. Because this type of packet supports web-like facilities and HTML editing, you can also create links to external sources of information and you can create internal links to other areas of your course. This is especially useful when you want to create topic review lists in a course to give a student the option of revisiting material that has already been covered. Like the graphics packet, text packets allow you to include sound files that can be used to clarify information presented by the packet.
|
|
The course library
Many courses include common information or sections that are used by other courses within an organization or series. MakeIT simplifies inclusion of common components in a course by providing a librarian for collecting together these common packets so they are available to the author when working on other courses. Simply create a packet you might like to use in another course and drag it onto the librarian. It will then be saved and ready the next time you are working on or creating a course so that you can simply drag a copy of it into the new course outline.
|
|
|
Review your course before publishing
Finally, MakeIT includes a robust preview function for checking the flow and accuracy of your materials as you develop your course. It also includes a publishing engine that will prepare your final product for use in the ILMS AdministrateIT and LearnIT products. The description of the MakeIT functionality provided here is just a small sample of the full functionality available to an author. MakeIT strives to make the authoring exercise easy, productive and fun!
