Incorrect function

SYMPTOMS
Infrequently during ILMS software installations or when a Course Install is initiated within AdministreIT or ManageIT, the operation (install) fails. The text for the error is \"Incorrect function.\"

CAUSE
The cause of this error is unknown and is under investigation.

The underlying error (\"Incorrect function\") is a Windows (System) error and the error is being reported by Windows to the ILMS software (Installer or AdministrateIT/ManageIT.)

See for example the Microsoft System (that is, Windows) error message summary here:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms681382.aspx

Searching the internet for \"Incorrect function\" with related terms such as \"CD\" or \"DVD\" or MSDN returns a typically large number of results. A sampling of \"hits\" refers fairly uniformly to this being an error generated by the CD/DVD drive itself and/or the CD/DVD device driver.

That conclusion is in agreement with the experience of Technical Support in resolving the few known cases of this error occuring.

RESOLUTION
Because the root cause is unknown no definitive fix can be formulated.

In all known (very infrequent) cases of this error occuring, the error as resolved by applying one or more of the following potential fixes:
    1) Checking the Event Viewer for relevant log entries
    2) Assuring that the machine (Windows) is fully updated and that the CD/DVD device driver is updated (if possible and appropriate)
    3) Cleaning up the target machine and reinstalling
    4) Getting a new/different CD
    5) Installing on a different machine
    6) Replacing the CD/DVD drive and it's associated driver(s)

In summary:
    1) This is a Windows System error
    2) The best available evidence suggests it is a machine issue (whether hardware or Windows system software or device driver)
    3) Because the root cause is unknown no definitive fix is known
    4) In all known occurences of this error one or more of potential fixes listed above resolved the issue.

MORE INFORMATION
Referring to the Microsoft link given above or searching the internet for keywords such as \"Incorrect function CD\" etc will generate a rather large volume of (generally) related information.

We had a user have this issue on a Vista Business computer, and all of the CD's seemed to be bad. However, when we tried to copy to the machine through windows it was succesful, and we were also able to install from the hard drive.

At this point it looked like a potential driver/OS issue. I had the user upgrade their system to Vista SP1 with all the current patches, and the incorrect function error went away.
