Dual VCR controls are displayed which cause LearnIT to crash

Dual VCR controls are displayed which, if used, cause LearnIT to crash

SYMPTOMS
If the Windows Media player controls are displayed in the LearnIT Course Player as pictured below, and these redundant controls (circled) are used in any way, LearnIT may exhibit strange behavior, freeze, crash, or stop responding. This may require the user to “End Task“ on the LearnIT process from the Windows Task Manger which will then leave the license(s) in use and may prevent subsequent LearnIT logon.

CAUSE
This is caused by the following Windows Update:
“Security Update for Windows Media Player (KB973540)”
This update is tagged as critical by Microsoft. Therefore, if Windows “Automatic Updates” are enabled, this file will be installed without the user’s knowledge or ability to intervene.

RESOLUTION
Please keep in mind… If the controls (circled above) are avoided and instead the built in Course Player controls (bottom left) are used, the video should play just fine with no adverse effect.

The following process can be performed to prevent the redundant VCR controls from showing in the LearnIT Course Player...

1) Close all open\\running ILMS software.
2) Navigate to - C:\\Program Files\\Iluminar Technologies\\ILMS - and rename the current/present version of ALMSCtls.dll to a different but obvious name, perhaps ALMSCtls.dll.old.
3) Download the patched file here:
http://www.iluminartechnologies.com/fil ... MSCtls.zip
4) Open the downloaded zip file containing the patch and copy the new version of ALMSCtls.dll into the ILMS directory shown in step 2.
5) Test LearnIT course playback to verify that the redundant Windows Media Player controls are no longer visible.

*Note*
This patch will only work on ILMS version 1.1.6 or 1.1.7. If you have an older version, please call your account representative to request an updated installation disk. Only after ILMS is updated can this patch be applied successfully.

APPLIES TO
This problem is seen on all 1.x versions of ILMS, all Windows operating system variants of XP and Vista, at all Service Pack levels, if the Microsoft Windows Update (KB973540) is installed as shown in the “CAUSE” section above.
